Project structure

The backbone structure of the APPLES is summarized in the flow chart below.

The project starts with an assessment of the energy needs and priorities in poor communities in rural, urban and peri-urban settings. On the basis of this needs assessment best-practice energy service options are identified that meet the needs of these poor communities. The knowledge on energy needs and priorities of poor communities will provide inputs to national policy making on energy access. The needs assessment and the identified options for the provision of energy services will underpin the key focus of APPLES. That is, facilitating the implementation of enhanced energy service delivery models to meet the energy needs of the poor by the South African Government. In particular, the project envisages to support the establishment of several Integrated energy Centres.

Throughout the project the work will be closely linked to ongoing government and donor initiatives on energy access in South Africa. Moreover, APPLES will spend considerable time on knowledge dissemination and capacity building in order to ensure sustainability of the project’s achievements and the integration into national policies.
